The Graduate School Fair is at the center of the California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education. For two full hours, you’ll have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with graduate school representatives from across the country. They are eager to connect with students like you. Whether you’re just beginning to explore graduate school or already working on your applications, the fair is your chance to gather information, ask questions, and take your next step.
What to Expect
The fair takes place midday (from 12:00–2:00 PM) and is designed to be conflict-free—meaning no workshops or panels are scheduled during this time. You can focus fully on connecting with recruiters and learning about programs without missing any other part of the Diversity Forum. Each attending university or department will be set up at a table, staffed by admissions representatives, faculty, and/or graduate students. They’re there to meet future scholars, researchers, change-makers, and educators.
Lunch is also available during this time. Either grab a bite to eat early before exploring the recruiter tables, or start at the tables and pick up your lunch later. Both are sound options, so choose the path best for you.
How to Prepare
- Make a List: Review the list of attending institutions in the Guidebook app and highlight the programs you’re most interested in. Focus on schools that offer your field of study, strong funding, or faculty research you admire.
- Plan Questions: You don’t need a perfect script, but a few possible starting points to get the conversation moving. Some possibilities include:
- What makes your program unique?
- What funding opportunities are available?
- What do successful applicants usually have in common?
- How does your program support first-gen or underrepresented students?
- Bring Something to Take Notes: A notebook or your phone is perfect. Jot down names, email addresses, and standout details while they’re fresh.
You Don’t Need to Be “Ready"
Many students think they need to have everything figured out before talking to a recruiter... not true. These conversations are integral to your exploration process. Even if you’re still unsure about grad school, you belong at the fair. Asking questions now can help you feel more prepared later.
Make Connections That Last
It’s totally okay (and encouraged) to follow up with a recruiter after the event. If you had a great conversation or want to learn more, send a thank-you email or ask to join a mailing list. Graduate programs love hearing from students who are engaged and thoughtful.
And remember: your presence at the fair sends a message, too. It says, "I see myself in graduate school. I’m taking this seriously. I’m showing up."
Other Tips
- Introduce yourself - everyone at the table is there for you
- Take breaks if needed - there’s no pressure to visit every table
- Use the Guidebook app - to locate programs and read descriptions on the go
You’ve Got Two Hours, Make Them Count
The Graduate School Fair is more than just an information session, it’s a space where futures begin to take shape. Come curious. Come prepared. Come as you are. And walk away one step closer to where you want to be.
